Cried reading this. So much in common with you, I’ve never heard someone write quite like this about the experience. I feel your anger and I feel that it’s channeled into something beautiful. Thank you
I related to every single word here. From being the daughter of immigrants, to the neglect/dysfunction in the family, to service. I personally feel drawn to animals and work in rescue, feeding them when they need feed, taking them to the vet, organizing with other volunteers. Self care is so important to be able to be of service. Thank you. Sharing widely
Thank you so much for writing and bringing this essay out to the world. Related to this so much with the upbringing, the unlearning, and now learning how to open up and give. Thank you again - I’m so inspired by your words, actions, and grace to feed both bellies and souls.
Anna, your writing is so beautifully moving. I’ve read and re-read the sentence about the drop in the bucket, and it echoes in my head. The part about how serving others lets us access our own compassion. It all ties together so well because we are all connected, as you so eloquently point out. Your writing always makes me laugh and think, and today it made me truly consider how I can give more of the love inside me. Thank you for your vulnerability and your call to action. This piece has pierced my heart.
Emily, thank you so much for this very thoughtful comment. It is so healing and lightening for me to share these types of essays, and being able to connect with a similar pain in others truly means the world to me. Thank you for helping me lighten my load. I hope to do the same for you sometime.
So very moved by this piece of writing. As someone who thought that sheerly by giving to others I could remedy my own wounds and trauma, I’m trying to get over that phase of “physician, heal thyself” and figure out how to serve others in a way that’s sustainable and, hopefully, underscored by wisdom. Thank you for this inspiration, and I hope you find all that you need, too.
I'm not talking to my mother, either. Loved this essay. Feeding each other, & feeding those who need help eating for whatever reason is critical community connection.
This is a beautiful essay, I’ll be thinking about it all day and for a long time to come. Thank you for writing it and sharing with us💚
Just beautiful. Thank you for writing this!

This was an astounding piece of writing. 💎
Love all of this so much, and especially “Nobody is coming for us except for us”!
Every little thing that each of us can do to reduce harm and provide a tiny bit of help counts.
